Our client entered the ‘urban mobility’ sector for the first time, with a premium 650cc scooter. The client outsourced the entire programme to partners, using Ricardo for the powertrain engineering and Exnovo for the vehicle engineering.
We were responsible for the early market studies, concept layouts and vehicle specification definition in advance of the main project commencing. Demanding performance and cost targets were set to allow this project to be competitive with established benchmark bikes in this vehicle sector.
For the powertrain, Ricardo was wholly responsible for the design and development of the engine, transmission, final drive, intake, exhaust and swing arm, working with a powertrain manufacturing partner in Asia. From day one, we ensured that the design would enable the use of local materials, supply base and manufacturing capabilities, whilst meeting the demanding quality standards of our client.
The vehicle went into volume production in 2012, and has enjoyed good sales and market acceptance since this time.
